Calendar Shoot

I just finished photographing four gorgeous dogs for the Kentucky Humane Society cover. Here’s the winning shot:)

As is the norm with multiple dogs, I shot about 100 images to get one where all four dogs were just perfect. And I do love this one!  You don’t even want to know what the two gals who brought the dogs and I were doing to get their attention. I think I could never do a documentary on pet photography because I would feel like a complete moron. But.. ya know… you do what you have to do!

Anyway- this will be on the front of the KHS calendar available in many places towards the beginning of 2010- including at your nearby Feeder’s Supply. Please think about buying one.. there’s NO better cause!

Pound Puppies!

Can you imagine seeing this little guy look through the bars of his cage at the Kentucky Humane Society and NOT taking him home? This is Cody. He’s a mix of many different breeds and a gorgeous one-of-a-kind friend to cute Ella.

Ella is also from the Kentucky Humane Society and I think she may have some corgi in her because those ears remind me of my own Henry. Ella definitely has a split personality. One is the sweet and calm dog you see most of the time…. and the other is the crazed, wild-eyed dog who is anywhere in the vicinity of a tennis ball! Look at those crazy eyes:) I could not stop laughing at her!

This dog likes to play fetch like I have NEVER seen! And, believe me, I’ve seen a lot of dogs! She goes NUTS when she sees a tennis ball. You really have to see it to believe it:)

But, otherwise, she’s actually quite a calm and attentive little dog.

She really listens and does exactly what she’s asked to do-sit in the flowers, stand on the wall- anything you want!

Coby is just a little guy- about 3 and a half months. His ears are his best feature. I think he looks like the flying nun in this shot! :)

What killer eyes, right? And the thing I like about Coby is he has a zest for life but doesn’t hesitate to stop and smell the roses:)

Pound puppies who bring happiness wherever they go! LOVE them!!!!

Ain’t nothin’ like a hound dog- or a cat who thinks she’s one….

When I arrived at Boomer and Axton’s home- I would have expected to see cute Boomer the hound at the window waiting for me. And he was- tail wagging and ears flopping.

But I don’t normally get an enthusiastic door greeting by the cat. In fact, there have been times when I’ve had to sit quietly in a client’s kitchen or den for a prolonged period of time just to get the cat to come out from under a couch or bed!

Not the case here. Especially not after Axton spotted the camera. She loves a good portrait session- as long as it involves her.

Axton waited impatiently at the window the entire time I was photographing Boomer. And then she began a series of poses for me. I mean, truly, she’s a dream cat for a photographer!

Below is the look she gave me when I tried to make barking noises at her to get her attention. Yeah, right. Like there’s any chance she’s going to fall for that one.

Yep- I’m pretty sure she’s either marveling at the barking idiot in front of her or contemplating how to take over the world. Not sure which.

Boomer is actually a little camera shy- but he warmed up to the idea after a little while.

He was adopted from the Kentucky Humane Society after someone found him wandering along a rural road. Maybe he was a rejected hunting dog- because he is afraid of loud noises. But, I mean, with those ears- who can blame him for being a little sensitive?

He’s a really sweet guy- and he has the gorgeous, soulful eyes that only a hound has!

So it was a GREAT time photographing these two. Sweet Boomer, and Axton- the posing cat. :)

Chanley and Bue

I’ve been traveling for business and- otherwise-:) for most of the past few weeks. But it was great to get back in the swing of things with these two very happy hounds!

When Chanley and Bue took off into a dead run the minute they stepped into the studio. They played and jumped around and went tearing through the set. They are both really funny dogs.

We chose to photograph Bue first because she was really eager to get into the treats!

Bue was hilarious! She would perform like a circus freak for the little salmon treats I had. I love dogs like her- because every shot is a great one. :)

Chanley cracked me up. Because she started out as a crazy loony dog ( seriously, I couldn’t make her stay on the set for ANYTHING)

But… she was like a race car with a tank 1/8 full. She went for a while.. they completely tuckered out. She was trying to catch a nap after about 20 minutes:)

Chanley probably needs the rest. She’s had a tough time of it lately. She was found abandoned in the streets a few months ago. She was put up for foster care and when her Mom took her, she found out quickly that Chanley had heart worms! Chanley was actually supposed to be on the cover of the GRRAND calendar this year- along with another dog I photographed- but she was too sick with heart worms to make the shoot.

But as you can see, she’s back to her old self now- and she is newly adopted into a fantastic home!

Of course, the first requirement for Chanley’s adoption was that she get along with Beu. And they have a lot of fun together- even though Bue is definitely the boss!

Hilarious floppy tongues, right?

Bue and Chanley- adorable dogs who live life to the fullest, and then take naps! :)
