Alaskan Wildlife

I am so excited- I’m going back to Alaska tomorrow!

Alaska is one of my very favorite places in the world. I have some images I shot last summer and I think you’ll understand why I love it so much.

First of all… there are no words to describe it’s beauty. Truly- it can take your breath away. I pulled my rental car to the side of the road and shot this photo right on the curb of the highway.

Alaska is truly wilderness. My son and I went out to find some bears and I got some really close-up photos. These pictures were taken with a 70-200mm lens.. which is not a particularly high powered zoom. So you can imagine how close we were to these guys. But I think most of the time, bears get a bad rap. You definitely have to have a lot of respect for them, and make sure you do nothing that makes them feel threatened or challenged. We had fantastic guides- a married couple who have been hiking with bears for decades. And they made sure we stayed safe and sound. I wouldn’t be so confident on my own- that’s for sure:)

It was so amazing to see a mother and cubs this close. She went fishing and brought salmon right back to them. They hid in the bushes and we could hear them crunching on their lunches!

Below are some photographs of some “bachelor” bears who were out for a day of fishing and playing with each other. See how bright orange the salmon are in the river? Really spectacular.

These are a few photos taken at Denali National Park. That was definitely one of the highlights last trip- my son and I stayed in a cabin with no electricity or plumbing. And the weather was about 40 degrees and raining the entire time.. But we still had a blast. And we had a beautiful view of Denali (Mt. McKinley) from our cabin. This photo was taken at about midnight right outside our window.

So can you see why I am so anxious to get back??? I can hardly wait to land! I’m going with my husband this time- and some friends. I’m going to fly fish for the first time ever. In the streams with the bears:)

But we’ll be careful.  I’ll update when I return!

Chance and Sydney

Chance and Sydney are a little like the odd couple.

I mean- at first glance - they don’t really look like they belong together. I imagine Chance is a little messy and probably leaves his bones around the house. Sydney seems like she might be a little tidy thing and I think she definitely rules the roost!

Sydney is a tiny “sort of Poodle” ( according to her Mom.)  That is to say, she is supposed to be a Poodle but looks suspiciously like a Bishon mix. :)

Not that it matters. She has an adorable personality and, as you can see, a sweet, happy nature.

And she is quite the little poser. She was working those angles!

Syndey’s pal, Chance, is a very sweet guy. He has one of those lovely faces that has such a deep and wise expression.

Chance has been loved by his family for 14 years. That’s a really long time.  Unfortunately, he is having a lot of trouble getting around and he’s starting to lose some of his sparkle.

It’s the hardest thing about loving a dog- they just don’t stay with us long enough.

But Chance has had a wonderful life- and he had a great day in the sunshine.

I think one thing I love about dogs the most is that they are happy to live each moment- and I think they help us do the same.

My thoughts and prayers are with Chance’s family as they go through a difficult week. He’s definitely made their world a better place.

He’s a good boy.
