My menagerie. Dogs: Daisy and Henry, Horses: Kid and Max

My son took these photos……..

…..of me at my first National Reining Horse Association horse show!

That’s me with my “rental” horse, Molly Melody in front of a packed house ( ha!)

I got a score of “0″. Of course, that’s the worst you can get. But I actually was pretty pleased because I did a decent job through the entire pattern until the very end when I thought I was finished and backed up a few steps. Who knew you couldn’t do that? Certainly not me- as I neglected to read the rule book. Oh well.

Here’s another photo of Molly and me ( courtesy of my wonderful son who patiently endured the two-day horse show in Bowling Green.)

She’s so cute, isnt’ she?:) And you should see her spin and slide- she’s a pro!

I had a great time with my trainer, Cory Craig, of Craig Performance Horses and all my reining friends. ( Luckily they all scored better than me!) And they talked me down as I was truly a bit nervous in my first reining show.

I’m sure I’ll have many more to come- and the good news is…. I have no place to go but up!

Kid’s Close-up

So… I photographed a horse for a client a few weeks ago and she requested some eye shots. I have done that quite a bit- I think it’s a really cool angle, and if you’re a horse person, you know how amazing those eyes are! But a lot of time, the client doesn’t really pay much attention to this angle and prefers a full head-shot or a full body-shot.

Anyway… to make a long story short… this one client ordered the “eye shot” in sepia, in a canvas. It came back last week and it was SO fabulous I couldn’t stand it. MAJOR perk of being a photographer is the ability to go out and get shots or my animals whenever I want:)

So I totally copied her idea and shot some eye shots of my own horse, Kid, and ordered a great big canvas in sepia for myself!!

Here’s the shot.

Kid is 23 years old, and I’ve been with him since he was 2. So he is totally my baby. He has “doe eyes”- large, expressive and kind.

And I loved this angle because it shows only his expression. I can’t wait until the canvas comes. He’s so gorgeous- my home will be all the more beautiful with him in it. :)

Snow Day!!

I don’t think anyone was more excited about today’s snow day than my son. It’s funny how he doesn’t ever get cold- he’s probably been sledding for four hours straight!

However, in a close second to my son is my dog Daisy. She loves, LOVES the snow. It makes her so happy!

She’s had that red ball since she was a puppy- it’s her favorite thing in the world!

Little Henry- he isn’t quite as overjoyed by the snow- especially since it’s deeper than his little legs!

How cute is he? He tries so hard to keep up with crazy Daisy!

You gotta love a good snow!!

And you’ve gotta love how I still haven’t updated my copyright. Better go do that now, oops!

Winter Break!

Wow- were the heck have I been?  Taking a few weeks off. Whew!

I can safely say I’ve done very little but eat for the past two weeks. My son was out of school and I just wanted to spend some time with him- so we have just been relaxing, visiting friends, riding horses and watching basketball. And you know, I don’t have much to show for it in the way of photos.I did take this one of the two dogs in front of the tree.

Doesn’t my shepherd look joyful with that jingle bell? NOT. She hates anything that makes noise! She was seriously pathetic but I made her pose for just one picture:) Then I set her free!

My little dog actually loved the bells and kept running around in circles to make them ring more. ( at least that’s what I’m telling myself- I guess it’s entirely possible he was just going nuts!)

Oh- and can you tell it’s the year of the Cuisinart? I got a food processor and my son got a popcorn maker which is SUPER cool! (OK, I admit I got it for him and I’m the only one who has used it- but is that so wrong?)

I have a few fun new photography toys and I have been busy trying them out. The biggest one is a wacom tablet- which I know all my photographer friends are probably already using- but I’m a little behind the times on getting one! It’s basically a pen that you can use instead of a mouse when photo editing and it is much more precise. However, it is SO  hard to get used to!! Ugh!! I was just trying to touch up a reflection in a girl’s glasses and I erased half of her eye. I’m thinking I need some practice on that one…

The other things I’ve been working on are some renovations to my website, my logo colors and my blog. Coming soon…….. :)

So a belated Happy New Year to you all- I’m looking forward to a fantastic 2009. Hurray!

My Inspiration!

One of the best things about being a pet photographer is the time I get to spend with my own pets. I don’t actually take them on shoots because my dogs would be a huge distraction and my horse doesn’t fit in the back of my car!

But when I’m in my office, my dogs are always here with me. Little Henry always hangs out behind my chair and Miss 100 pound Daisy always lies underneath my feet at my desk, which means that I can neither scoot forwards nor backwards. But, hey, that’s OK- I love it!

So let me introduce you to my little companions…… Henry is 11 years old and I adopted him when he was 2. He is the most hilarious dog ever- seriously! He makes the funniest faces and in true corgi form, he will do absolutely anything for a treat. This includes standing on hind legs, turning around, rolling over- and sometimes he does all those things at once.

He's super cute, isn't he?

Henry is super cute- isn’t he??

Henry’s best bud is his “big sister” Daisy. Daisy is a Shiloh Shepherd and actually she is much younger than Henry- she’s only 2. She out-weighs Henry by 75 pounds but when they play-fight she always lets him win. They are polar opposites in personality- nothing bothers Henry and everything bothers Daisy. She doesn’t like treats, and she is scared of the camera. But I’ll tell you what- that dog can pose! It takes me a while to get her comfortable but I really think she’d be a supermodel if she were human!

See what I mean??

I think she’s gorgeous………

Daisy loves to play- here’s a picture of her with her “pet stick”. She loves this particular stick- I have no idea why. I took a wide shot to show you my outdoor studio. It’s a really lovely place to photograph and a lot of clients will just bring their dogs here. There’s a fountain and a garden- so even the little dogs who don’t like to run so much can find a pretty spot.

Last but not least is my man Kid, whose official grown-up name is “My Sundown Kid”. He’s 21 years old and we’ve been together since he was 3. We used to travel to horse shows all over the country, but now he just chills at the barn next to my house and eats grass with his buddies. Sometimes we go trail riding but more often we just hang out.  He’s awesome. Super sweet, talented- huge heart. I love him lots!

Not bad for an old guy, right?
