Juno- Louisville Husky

I just have to say, first of all, that I am *always* excited to shoot portraits Huskies!  They are just such stunning dogs. And Juno is no exception. She is a gorgeous young girl with lots of energy and the right mix of exuberance and intensity to take a wonderful portriat. The Kentucky heat at the time of this shoot was smoking! It was about 100 degrees- not exactly Husky weather. But she did a lovely job posing for me and I think she just always enjoys spending time with her people. For this shoot- she even got to visit the grandparents!

So enjoy.. beautiful Juno.

Louisville Weimaraner Calendar Cover!

The summer heat has not been easy on us here at Hound and Hoof Photography! Everyone loves a smiling dog portrait- but I always prefer it when not when *every* picture is a great, big, slobbery smile!!

And, as you might imagine, it’s a challenge to get very hot dogs to put their little tongues inside their mouths.. even for a second!

But, as usual, patience prevailed! And Gailen was the perfect “Cover Boy”.  He’s a very well trained dog and he was very responsive to my queues and noises and treats. Whew!! Made my life much easier.

Here are a few of the images we came up with- showcasing this gorgeous breed of dog and the hometown of our model!

So how excited do you think little Gailen was to be in Mom’s corvette??  SUPER excited! First time he’s ever stepped foot -or paw- in it, in fact. I think he’s going to be begging to ride in style to the Feeder’s Supply from now on. After all, he is a big- time model.

By the way… this breed of dog is so stunning. I love LOVE LOVE to photograph them!!

I was reluctant to develop anything in black and white because Gailen’s eyes are such a gorgeous yellow color. But.. I like this image because of his intense gaze.

So one of these photographs will be on the calendar cover- not sure which one. But I’m sure you’ll want to buy a calendar to benefit the Louisville Weimaraner Rescue, which serves Kentucky and Indiana. It’s a great organization working to save the lives of some wonderful dogs.

Remembering Buster

We photographed Buster over the winter- dodging bad weather and cold, cold days.  Buster’s family knew, even then, that he did not have much time left with them and they wanted to make sure they had some precious photos of his last days.

Well, it turned out that Buster was able to see another spring- and even part of this summer. But he succumbed to old age and even though it has been expected for a long time, it is still a heartbreaking loss for his family. You can see the love in these pictures from his human family- especially his “dad” and his best friend Molly. And you can see the spirit in Buster’s eyes as he enjoyed a day in the park- the same park he where he spent his puppy days fetching balls and swimming in the lake.

I wish Buster’s family the best in their grieving process.

Rest in peace, Buster. You were a good boy.

Natalie, Heather and little Ringo

Family shoots are awesome- especially when a pet is involved. And especially when the subjects are so gorgeous it’s nearly impossible to take a bad shot!

Heather is the older of the two sisters. She’s athletic, smart and {obviously} gorgeous.

Heather reminds me of Jenna Bush a little. You know, the former President’s daughter who is now a reporter for the Today Show. Don’t you think?

She has a great smile, I think. Yep= not too tough to make this girl look good. :)

Fortunately, both of the girls are fans of Tyra Bank’s show- America’s Top Model.  I’m kind of a closet stalker of that show ( I guess I’m not in the closet anymore). I love it. In fact one day I watched a marathon of that show for 5 hours. I’m not proud of it. It was a Sunday and it was raining. Does that make it OK?  And it’s sort of work connected- a little. I mean, there are cameras involved, and really great photographers.  It helps me when I photograph younger girls- you know- getting them into the light. It’s all about the light.

I love this one because of the way the trees frame her from above. She got a little wet for this shot. Thanks, Heather:)

Younger sister Natalie- adorable girl with super shiny dark hair and the freshest face ever.  Her eyes are so gorgeous- they just shine.

Natalie has such a natural look about her, and those freckles!!  I love freckles. I don’t have any. OK-  I have some but I got them when I was older from too much sun so they don’t really count.   One time, when I was a kid,  I layed out in the sun with masking tape on my face checker-boarded to make little squares. It didn’t work. Don’t try this at home.

This one’s my favorite. The wind is catching her hair just right and her eyes are just sparkling.  I’ll tell you one thing, I sure didn’t look like this in middle school!

Of course, you know, I had to photograph the dog. Ringo is such a little stinker. So cute! Like his “sisters”, he loves the camera !

He’s not a fan of Tyra Banks, but he still poses pretty well.  It’s all about the biscuit!

The Golden Dogs!

I had a shoot the other day for the cover of the 2011 GRRAND calendar.  That’s the calendar that raises money for the Golden Retriever Rescue and Adoption of Needy Dogs. It’s a wonderful organization serving Louisville, Lexington and Cincinnati.

The calendar cover goes to the highest bidder during the live auction at the GRRAND Affair fundraiser. In this year’s calendar (2010), you’ll find the gorgeous Beatrice gracing the cover.

But the 2011 calendar cover will be entirely different because it will feature *three* fabulous goldens!

Meet Wade, Duke and Madeleine……

Wade is a darling older chap. He’s on the left. He is just the most gentle soul- and he was the easiest to shoot because he was very alert and cooperative!  Duke is in the middle and he was the toughest to photograph because he wanted to be with his Dad every minute and kept wandering out of the shot. But who can blame him, right? By the way, just how much do you *love* Duke’s spotty tongue. It totally makes that shot, I think!  And Maddy, the super photogenic dog on the right, would have probably stood on her head for the right treat. She’s adorable!

I think you can tell these guys are great buddies, I love that they will just squeeze together for a shot. That’s kind of unusual- a lot of times the dogs want just a little space from each other!

I think the image below is really fun because they’re just hanging in their back yard. Madeleine and Wade are looking right at my hand ( there’s a treat in it) and Duke is looking off at his Dad. Cute!

I think the photograph below might be my favorite. I just think it shows their personalities because Wade looks like he’s in a dog show- standing perfectly and being a good boy, Duke is a tiny bit anxious because his Dad isn’t right there but he’s trying his best not to show it, and Madeleine is staring at that treat I’m holding like she’s afraid it’s going to fly away. Ha!  It’s really fun to shoot multiple dogs, especially when they are so big and gorgeous as these guys.

So… not sure which image we’ll end up choosing for the calendar cover, but I’m happy we pulled it off:)  These dogs really deserve the cover because they have all been through a lot at some time in their lives. They are all rescues and bring such great joy to their parents- as adopted dogs almost always do!
